Romance Movies: Test Your Sap-O-Meter!

Just how much of a romance movie aficionado are you? If you are as fond of sappy sweet movies as I am, then these will be a breeze to identify! The fun quizzes below are all about happily-ever-after romance movies and are of two types—

The first quiz contains 10 movie plot summaries. Can you identify the movie?

The second quiz contains a love-centric quote. Since this is a bit more difficult, I give four movie choices. Can you identify the correct movie for the quote? 

The answers for both quizzes are in the spoilers below, but do your best guessing before peeking!

HINTS:

• I did not choose movies that have bittersweet endings. I enjoy the occasional sad romance, such as Moulin Rouge or The Bodyguard, but focused on warm and fuzzy romances.
• I limited the choices to movies that fall into the “romance” genre with romance as a main theme even if there are subplots, or if it is listed as a rom-com, romance drama, etc.
• Most of the choices are listed on my Pinterest Board “Cinema: Romance” if you need a bit of help!

IDENTIFY THE MOVIE PLOT!

A.  Set during the Edwardian Era, a young woman is touring Italy with her older cousin. While at a hotel in Florence, she meets an odd but charming, free-spirited man. Intrigued and attracted, the proper young lady returns home determined to forget him. . . and that outrageous kiss! She accepts a marriage proposal from the wealthy, stoic suitor her upbringing demands is the wise choice. Will her convictions stay firm when the mysterious man from Italy moves into her hometown? 

B.  An uptight, snobbish spinster is left alone when her missionary brother is killed in war-torn Africa. The only way out is on a dilapidated river boat captained by a grumpy, dissolute, hard-drinking man who appears as untrustworthy as the broken-down vessel. The difficult journey is fraught with dangers from the harsh environment and warring enemy, although the battling between the stubborn companions is the greater hazard. Until, that is, they unite to deliver a decisive blow to the evil empire, a feat that will either kill them both or bring them closer together. . . maybe even to the point of admitting they are in love. 

C.  The newest recruit in the U.S. Navy’s Aviation Academy has a rocky past resulting in an untrusting personality not conducive to making friends, believing in love, accepting authority, or being a leader. In for a series of harsh lessons, this young man with a bad attitude ultimately has to choose what he wants out of life, both in a career and with the woman who touches his cold, lonely heart. 

D.  A feisty widow accepts a marriage proposal from her steady if doltish boyfriend. Admittedly not in love, she is determined to do the right thing this time, in order to avoid what she believes was a curse that led to the death of her husband. After meeting her fiancé’s brother —a wild man whom she is instantly and passionately drawn to— she doubles down on her vow to follow her head and not her heart. Even a shocking revelation about her parents does not sway her… or so she claims.

E.  On a magical night before Christmas, a man and woman meet. For him it is love at first sight, but she believes in destiny and that if they are meant to be together the universe will arrange another encounter. Ten years pass, neither forgetting the other completely but also moving on with their lives. Then, unable to shake the lingering feelings, they each decide destiny needs to be nudged and attempt to find the other. Will they succeed? Or does destiny indeed have the final word on what is meant to be?

F.  When a top-tier athlete’s spirit is preemptively taken from his body by an overzealous angel, the only option is to find a new body for him. With no decent ball players on the death roster, a recently murdered millionaire must suffice. Determined to make the best of a bad situation, the athlete focuses exclusively on getting the new body in prime shape so he can return to the game. What he last expects is to be distracted by the potential good a rich man can accomplish, especially when inspired by a beautiful, driven environmental activist. Perhaps playing professional sports isn’t everything when true love is at stake. Too bad the millionaire’s wife is set on killing him. . . again.

G.  When the sitting President of the United States suffers a debilitating stroke, his staff buys time by replacing with an average Joe who is a virtual identical in appearance. Much to their surprise, while looking exactly the same, the good-hearted doppelgänger is the exact opposite in character from the comatose leader of the free world. Matters speedily spiral out of control, especially when the First Lady begins to suspect something isn’t quite right, in large part due to falling in love with the husband she has despised for years.

H.  A soon-to-retire psychiatrist accepts a new, suicidal patient who claims to be a fabled seducer of women. Confident it is a straightforward case of mental delusion easily grounds for placement into an institution, the youth’s stories of an exotic world of love, passion, and zeal for life are captivating. Even more surprising, when the doctor applies the philosophies espoused by the self-proclaimed “greatest lover in the world” to his passionless, waning marriage, the remarkable results cause him to question the supposed insanity of his patient.

I.  A successful New York businessman has a bizarre attraction to the ocean off Cape Cod. Terrified of commitment and unlucky in love, in large part due to a persistent and unreasonable dream (memory?) of a mysterious encounter with a girl when he nearly drowned when a youth, he falls for a strange woman who seeks him out after appearing naked at the Statue of Liberty. The woman has a secret… one so incredible that only the truest and deepest love can accept. Will he risk everything to be with her, including the military hot on their heels?

J.  A rich socialite is mean… just plain mean! So when she loses her memory, the down-on-his-luck carpenter that she mistreated and refused to pay sees an opportunity for payback. Pretending to be her husband, he brings her home to be a free housekeeper and babysitter for his four boys. The plan works like a charm, until he realizes the boys have fallen in love with their new “mom” and that he has as well. His regret and guilt deepen when she falls in love with him too, but worse is the fear. When her memory returns, will all be lost?
